A Burner number is a unique telephone number that can be used for voice calls (via your mobile phone dialer, but bridged by us to maintain your privacy) or for SMS messages (via the Burner app -- ie not using the SMS function on your phone).
We believe that everyone has a right to privacy, and lots of us have times when we want to make private calls and text messages, as well as other reasons to use separate phone numbers.
Some of the ways people like to use burner are for dating, transactions such as things you are buying on Craigslist, job searches, salespeople, and generally sandboxing private things into their own line.
How Burner Works
When you create a new Burner, you have several options for which Burner type you buy, and each one has a different configuration of duration, minutes, and messages. For example, a Mini-Burner is good for 7 days, 20 minutes of voice, or 60 text messages.
What this means is that the Burner will expire at the earliest of the following events:
- Some number of days after you create it (e.g. 7)
- After you use voice minutes, or text messages, or a proportional combination of the two (for example, 10 voice minutes and 30 text messages)
- When you burn it via the app
Unused minutes, messages, and duration are forfeited when the number is burned. For example, leftover voice minutes at the end of a 30-day Burner cannot be recovered once it expires.
Burners can be extended via the settings button and "extend Burner" dialog. Any additional duration or minutes purchased as an extension are additive to your current duration and minutes. (For example, if you buy a 30-day, 50-minute Burner extension for a burner with 10 days and 15 minutes left on it, it will result in a burner that has 40 days and/or 65 minutes left to go.)
Each of the Burners and extension options is priced in terms of credits, which can be purchased through the iTunes store by pressing the "Buy Credits" button in various places in the app.
Burner is currently available in the US and Canada, for US and Canada phone numbers.
